hales, dolphins, porpoises and other lives in rivers and coastal waters of
Asia face many threats. Without prompt and decisive actions, many
populations and even some species will likely disappear in the next decade.
The extinction of any animal species may imply for interference to the natural
food web and deterioration to the nature environment on which human ourselves
rely.
-
Recognizing the problems, the
Ocean
Park Conservation Foundation (OPCF)
was founded at the
initiative of Ocean Park Corporation
in 1993 and became a registered independent charity in 1995.
-
The mission of OPCF is to "advocate,
facilitate and participate in the conservation of marine mammals and their
habitats in Asian rivers and coastal waters through research and education".
The
five-year Foundation action plan encompasses several focal marine mammal
species, which include the world¡¦s most endangered dolphin species, Yangtze
River Dolphin (also called Baiji), and the Indo-Pacific Humpbacked Dolphin,
commonly known as Chinese White Dolphin, that appears in Hong Kong waters.
